Dirk wasn't unfamiliar with fighting people with guns. Him and Jake sparred all the time, and Jake had two of them.
... Jake could also hold his own, knew how to parry and account for Dirk's swords, his moves. Even his - god he didn't even know how to describe Jake's relationship with Jade. Grandmother from an alternate timeline who was his granddaughter in hers??? Cousin. He made the executive decision to describe them as cousins. The point was the few times he strifed with her, without having that boon of familiarity between them, she still did a decent job.
So yeah a one hit kill was not at all what he was expecting. Enemies that went down so easily didn't even approach you outside of mob situations - the EXP you got from them was such a pittance it wasn't worth the time it took to take them down. And of course the mugger's shot had gone completely wide and nowhere near close to even clipping Dirk. He was pondering the situation (and nudging the guy on the ground with the tip of his shoe, curious) when another voice caught his attention.
More alert now, this meant someone who was actually skilled at sneaking up, not just getting lucky. Having already been jumped once, even pathetically so - well, could you blame Dirk for bringing his sword up first when he turned to see who the new maybe challenger was?
The heads up display on his glasses glitched in and out again - just enough to point out the bulk that was definitely guns under the jacket, tried to estimate the hardness of the body armor but the numbers flicked rapidly between ever-changing scores for MOH, HRC and HV before the whole thing went dead once more.
With not a bit of skin showing and that featureless helmet... yeah, Dirk was assuming robot. He'd known more robots than people for most of his life. And most were built for combat.
"Is it? I'm not from around here," Dirk replied, voice casual even as he kept his sword up, defensive.
